Leon Grundstein, Founder and President
Leon Grundstein has more than 28 years experience in real estate development, with over 2 decades of experience in the retirement industry. He founded GenCare Lifestyle with a game changing business model in mind to promote a healthy and robust retirement lifestyle for older adults. As a competitive athlete and a fitness enthusiast, Leon has been a long-term advocate for an active lifestyle where his belief in the physical and mental benefits translates to the innovative whole life concepts that have led to GenCare Lifestyle's focus on creating a new approach to wellness.
Before forming GenCare Lifestyle, Leon was a co-founder and partner of Merrill Gardens, a west coast chain of retirement communities. From 1993 to 1997, he served as a principal and senior officer. Prior to that Leon was president of Gencor, Inc. and a principal in Gencor Development Inc., two companies that developed, acquired and managed congregate care facilities for the elderly.
Leon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Michigan State University and maintains his Commercial Real Estate Brokers license in Washington state and is active in a number of local and national organizations including the American Senior Housing Association. He has served as vice president and a member of the Executive Board for the Stroum Jewish Community Center, a board member of "On the Boards" performance gallery, a past president of the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Greater Seattle, and a member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association Seattle Campaign Leadership Council.
Leon also sits on the Regional Campaign Leadership Council of Victors for Michigan, Office of University Development, University of Michigan, is Past President of the Board of Co-Motion Dance Company and is a current Committee Member of Jewish Family Services Home Health Care Agency.
Laurel Hammer, Corporate Director of Operations and Vitality
Laurel Hammer is a skillful and proficient asset that joins the GenCare team with an impressive career in the Retirement Living industry that spans almost three decades. Laurel most recently exhibited her well rounded skill set by positively turning a community around in less than five months by reaching 100% occupancy, and maintaining it two plus years.
Over the years, Laurel has assumed key management roles where she has held Regional positions successfully implementing systems and procedures for departments to ensure effective and efficient operation and state compliance. In her role as Regional Director of Operations for a national operator of senior living she managed over 1000 units in western Washington where she was responsible for increasing revenues dramatically along with improved NOI.
Laurel's accolades include winning the coveted Pinnacle Award for the top performing building in the nation after being recruited by Marriott International as a General Manager/Administrator, Hearthside of Lynnwood. She went on to become an Area Director, and Director of Alzheimer's Services for Marriott, opening and training programs across the country. Her education includes a Master of Education in Administration, Seattle Pacific University, and Bachelor of Science in Health, Physical Education, at Seattle Pacific University.
Personal Influences include beginning her career as a high school and college teacher /coach, where she played semiprofessional fast pitch softball, competed in AAU track, and coached many young girls and women's basketball and softball teams.
Marvon Pierce, Corporate Director of Culinary Services
Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Chef Marvon Pierce has acquired nearly 37 years experience in the food service hospitality industry. Marvon became corporate director of culinary services for Gencare Lifestyle in 2007, where he continued to advance his knowledge in health and nutrition, through consultation from nutritionists and culinary staff at Bastyr University, known for the study and advancement of natural health and nutrition. Under his leadership, GenCare Lifestyle became the first retirement company in the nation to become gluten-free certified. In addition, for the past 19 years, Marvon has had the privilege to serve the greater Seattle area as a certified BLS instructor for the American Heart Association.
Marvon is an ordained minister who enjoys creating music, playing the keyboards, and riding bicycles to stay fit.
Neil Edwards, Corporate Director of Marketing
Born in Coventry England, Neil received his B.A. degree from Staffordshire University. Neil joined the Gencare team in 2012 after working with Emeritus Senior Living in the role of Senior Community Relations Director. After the past 3 years serving at Gencare's Scriber Gardens community Neil accepted the position of Corporate Director of Marketing in 2016. He brings 25 years of senior living experience to the position both in operations as an Executive Director, as well as in sales and marketing for several major senior living companies. Neil began his career as a personal care aide in an assisted living community and attributes this experience above all for a passion to serve seniors and their families. Neil served as an Alzheimer's support group facilitator for many years.
Neil is excited about growing and maintaining occupancy at Gencare communities as well as strengthening the unique 'Whole Life Living' brand.
On a personal note Neil enjoys playing soccer year round in a recreational league, hiking with his family and playing the ukulele.
Simon Siu, Corporate Controller
Simon joined the Gencare team during the 4th quarter of 2015. He is responsible for Gencare Lifestyle’s corporate & property accounting and finance system.
With 20 years of combined experience in operations and accounting, he is the 3rd generation of his family to work in the real estate industry. He started his real estate career in the operations department of a residential property management company and then worked in residential & commercial property accounting.
He holds a B.S. degree in Accounting from Central Washington University and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the state of Washington. He is a member of the WA Society of CPAs. Away from work Simon's interests include world music, travelling, walking and reading.
Cristy Hartwell, Corporate Director of Energy and Fitness
Cristy Hartwell joined the Gencare Team in 2015. She has been working with the older population since 2009. She received her Personal Training Certification both in Vancouver, BC. and Seattle, WA. She is certified through Healthy Heart to work with clients with cardiac conditions, Osteofit for osteoporosis and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for cancer patients. Prior to becoming a Trainer, Cristy spent 10 years in the biotech industries involved in stem cell research, cancer metastasis and antibiotic discovery. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Winnipeg.
Cristy is also a John Maxwell Certified Trainer, Speaker and Coach. She believes in “Moving People from Success to Significance” in all areas of life. She studies and speaks on fitness, sports nutrition, and leadership development.
Cristy has been a competitive cyclist and runner and has completed the Half Ironman. She is an avid bike and bus commuter. She takes pride in being a BMW driver (that is, bike, metro and walk). She and her husband, Gregg, enjoy hiking and skiing, world culture and sushi.
