Leon Grundstein, Founder and President
Leon Grundstein has more than 28 years experience in real estate development, with over 2 decades of experience in the retirement industry. He founded GenCare Lifestyle with a game changing business model in mind to promote a healthy and robust retirement lifestyle for older adults. As a competitive athlete and a fitness enthusiast , Leon has been a long-term advocate for an active lifestyle where his belief in the physical and mental benefits translates to the innovative whole life concepts that have led to GenCare Lifestyle's focus on creating a new approach to wellness.
Before forming GenCare Lifestyle, Leon was a co-founder and partner of Merrill Gardens, a west coast chain of retirement communities. From 1993 to 1997, he served as a principal and senior officer. Prior to that Leon was president of Gencor, Inc. and a principal in Gencor Development Inc., two companies that developed, acquired and managed congregate care facilities for the elderly.
Leon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Michigan State University and maintains his Commercial Real Estate Brokers license in Washington state and is active in a number of local and national organizations including the American Senior Housing Association. He has served as vice president and a member of the Executive Board for the Stroum Jewish Community Center, a board member of "On the Boards" performance gallery and past president of the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Greater Seattle
Laurel Hammer, Corporate Director of Operations
Laurel Hammer is a skillful and proficient asset that joins the GenCare team with an impressive career in the Retirement Living industry that spans almost three decades. Hammer most recently exhibited her well rounded skill set by positively turning a community around in less than five months by reaching 100% occupancy, and maintaining it two plus years.
Over the years, Hammer has assumed key management roles where she has held Regional positions successfully implementing systems and procedures for departments to ensure effective and efficient operation and state compliance. In her role as Regional Director of Operations for a national operator of senior living she managed over 1000 units in western Washington where she was responsible for increasing revenues dramatically along with improved NOI.
Hammer's accolades include winning the coveted Pinnacle Award for the top performing building in the nation after being recruited by Marriott International as a General Manager/Administrator, Hearthside of Lynnwood. She went on to become an Area Director, and Director of Alzheimer's Services for Marriott, opening and training programs across the country. Her education includes a Master of Education in Administration, Seattle Pacific University, and Bachelor of Science in Health, Physical Education, at Seattle Pacific University.
Personal Influences include beginning her career as a high school and college teacher /coach, where she played semi professional fast pitch softball, competed in AAU track, and coached many young girls and women's basketball and softball teams.
Marvon Pierce, Corporate Director of Culinary Services
Marvon Pierce has 29 years experience in the food service hospitality industry with 17 years specializing in senior living. Marvon became corporate director of culinary services for GenCare in 2007. His dedication to providing delicious and nutritious meals for GenCare Lifestyle residents spurred him to continue to refine his culinary knowledge by studying cooking with a whole foods instructor at an international university known for the study and advancement of natural health and nutrition. He is also a certified Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor for the American Heart Association (AHA) and Gluten Free Certified. Marvon is an ordained minister and enjoys bicycle riding to stay fit.
Jerry Mahoney, Corporate Controller
Jerry hails from Seattle, graduated from Whitman College and completed his MBA at the University of Puget Sound. He has worked in Property Development and Management accounting for the past decade, primarily with locally owned companies. Continuous improvement and refinement of operations measurement are primary interests as well as expanding relevant business information throughout the enterprise. Jerry is active in local outdoor groups and enjoys running and biking as hobbies, and often rides his bike to work.
Pat Whaley, Corporate Director of Vitality
Patrick Whaley joined the GenCare Lifestyle team in January of 2010 and has immersed himself in learning the business by serving in multiple roles since that time. He started at the Ballard Landmark, as the driver for the vitality department, and has worked at multiple GenCare Lifestyle Communities, in our culinary, marketing, and vitality departments. Most recently he was the Director of Vitality at The Lodge at Eagle Ridge in Renton. Patrick was named the Corporate Director of Vitality in April, 2014. His knowledge of GenCare programming and goals will help as we continue to expand the Whole Life Living and Vitality programs across our communities.
Pat was raised in North Seattle, and attended Western Washington University, where he graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Services. After graduating from college he worked with Holland America Cruise Lines in Alaska.
Having a strong passion for an active lifestyle and sports, Pat enjoys spending his free time playing soccer, basketball, and softball, as well as, hiking, fishing, and camping.
